Happy New Year! As we turn the page on 2020 and enter our first week of the new year, Trucker Tools Market Index shows sustained demand for all types of capacity, but especially high demand for reefer. Outbound reefer tender rejection rates peaked at approximately 46 percent just before Christmas, and last week reefer rejection rates in some areas hit 65 percent. This is quite different from previous years, when reefer rejections rates declined during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

In the first Trucker Tools Market Index Report of 2021, we’re seeing elevated demand and rates across several markets in the South and Midwest, while some markets in the Northeast and Northwest are cooling. Heavy winds and snow are forecast for the coming week across the Northwest, so please stay safe out there!

Hottest Markets

  • In today’s Trucker Tools Market Index, Jonesboro, Ark.; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Bowling Green, Ky.; Roanoke, Va.; and South Bend, Ind., are predicted to be the hottest markets for flatbed over the next five to seven days.

  • If you’re running reefer, you’ll likely see demand and rates cool off over the next five to seven daysinclude Hartford, Conn., and Seattle, Wash.

Trucker Tools’ Market Insights

  • All of the cities in today’s Coldest Markets list will see only very slight decreases in demand/rates over the coming week.
  • Norfolk, Va., will be one of the hottest markets for reefer capacity in the coming week, which is no surprise, given that Virginia boast the second largest food-and-beverage processing sector in the Southeast.
  • Norfolk, Va., also is home to AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Merck and several other large biopharma companies, which is contributing to demand for reefer.
  • In 2020, Bowling Green, Ky., was named one of the top 20 cities for manufacturing in the United States. Companies based in Bowling Green, Ky., include Bowling Green Metalforming, General Motors, Henkel AG & CO, Kobe Aluminum Automotive Products, Country Oven Bakery, Dollar General and CGS Machine & Tool.
