Where’s the Freight? Fort Wayne, Cheyenne, Jonesboro, Columbus and Tucson Hottest Markets for Truckers and Carriers

Welcome to the mid-week edition of “Where the Freight?,” a free market report from Trucker Tools that tells you where demand for truck capacity will be high, low, increasing and decreasing in the coming week. With this information in hand, you can make informed decisions on loads and target loads that take you into areas where demand for capacity is project to be high or increasing.

In this Wednesday edition of “Where’s the Freight?,” a power only market in the Midwest is projected to be the highest demand market in North America in the coming week. Over the last year, the power only segment in trucking has grown significantly, recently reaching a 41-year high. Power only offers shippers flexibility, while it offers carriers and owner operators the ability to earn without owning or investing in trailers. Also of note in today’s “Where’s the Freight?,” demand for flatbed capacity is expected to be extremely low in several regions in the Northeast, while Jonesboro, Ark., is projected to see high demand for reefer capacity this week.

Where Demand Will Be High or Increasing 

  • In the next week, Cheyenne, Wyo., will be the highest-demand flatbed market in the country. Demand/rates for flatbed will likely be on the upswing this week to/from Southwestern Ontario and Texarkana, Texas. 
  • Jonesboro, Ark., and Tucson, Ariz., will likely be the highest demand/rate reefer markets in North America in the coming week. Reefer demand is projected to increase this week running to/from Dodge City, Kan., Tucson, Ariz., and Corpus Christi, Texas.
  • Fort Wayne, Ind., and Columbus, Ohio, will be the top power only markets for truckers/carriers over the next five to seven day period. 

Where Demand Will Be Low or Decreasing

  • Demand for flatbed inbound to and outbound from Portland, Maine, Springfield, Mass., Hartford, Conn., and Brooklyn, N.Y., will be extremely low this week. Demand for flatbed is expected to fall off this week for Jonesboro, Ark.
  • In the coming week, Las Vegas will be the lowest demand/lowest rate power only market in North America.

Trucker Tools’ Market Insights

  • According to the latest Trucker Tools data, the five best markets for truckers and carriers over the next five to seven days will be: 1. Fort Wayne, Ind. (power only), 2. Cheyenne, Wyo. (flatbed), 3. Jonesboro, Ark. (reefer), 4. Columbus, Ohio (power only), and 5. Tucson, Ariz. (reefer).
  • The five worst markets for truckers and carriers over the next five to seven days will be: 1. Portland, Maine (flatbed), 2. Springfield, Mass. (flatbed), 3. Hartford, Conn. (flatbed), 4. Las Vegas (power only), and 5. Brooklyn, N.Y. (flatbed).
  • Demand for power only capacity to/from Fort Wayne, Ind., is projected to be 12 times higher this week than it was at the same time in 2020.
  • According to FreightWaves CEO Craig Fuller, “fleets have added 42k new trucks for hire since the start of the year. Capacity up 2.6%. Volume up 13%.”
  • FreightWaves is reporting that outbound tender rejections, which measure demand for capacity, remain above 25 percent.
  • This week, demand for flatbed capacity inbound to and outbound from Cheyenne, Wyo., is expected to be twice as high as last year.
  • A little over a week ago, FreightWaves also reported that the haul length for Southern California markets has dropped by about 20 percent since March, indicating an imbalance in freight flow from west to east — which may be why four regions in the Northeastern United States are in our Top Five Coldest Markets list.
