Wouldn’t you like to know where demand for trucks will be highest and lowest across the country over the next five to seven days? If so, Trucker Tools has you covered! Our three times/week “Where’s the Freight?” market report tells you where rates are on the rise and where they’re expected to be low in the coming week. The beauty of “Where’s the Freight?” is that you know in advance where demand will be high or low, which allows you to get your truck(s) into hot markets and out of cold markets in time to maximize your revenue.

Demand for dry van capacity on the spot market is up across the nation, which is why in today’s edition of “Where’s the Freight?” you’ll see a Northern Plains dry van market listed as the third hottest market in the nation for truckers and carriers this week. You’ll also learn that demand for power only capacity is expected to drop in several regions, while demand and rates for flatbed capacity will remain elevated in several areas in the coming week.

Where Demand for Trucks Is High/Rising

  • Rapid City, S.D., Southwest Ontario (Canada), and South Bend, Ind., will be the best flatbed markets in the nation for truckers and carriers in the coming week. Flatbed demand will increase this week for Texarkana, Texas, Grand Junction, Colo., Lubbock, Texas, and St. Louis.
  • Tucson, Ariz., continues its reign as the best reefer market in the nation for drivers and carriers. Demand for reefer in and out of Tucson, Ariz., is expected to rise even higher over the next five to seven day period.
  • Rapid City, S.D., will be the top dry van market for truckers and carriers this week.

Where Demand for Trucks Is Low/Falling

  • Demand for flatbed capacity is expected to fall this week for Portland, Maine,
  • Hartford, Conn., Reno, Nev., and Seattle will continue to be among the least desirable reefer markets for truckers in the coming week.
  • Demand (and rates) for dry van in and out of Calgary, Alberta (Canada), will be extremely low over the next five to seven days.
  • Macon, Ga., is expected to be one of the coldest markets in the country this week for power only. Demand for power only capacity will be falling for Jackson, Miss., and Philadelphia.

  • Demand for flatbed capacity in and out of Rapid City, S.D., is five times higher than it was at this time last year, while demand for dry van in the region is eight times higher than it was at this time last year.
  • Rapid City, S.D., is one of the major transportation hubs in the Northern Plains and also is home to several farm and ranch equipment manufacturers that serve the state’s number one industry: agriculture.
  • Advanced manufacturing, warehousing, distribution and logistics are the top industries for South Bend, Ind., which is likely driving demand for flatbed capacity in and out of the area.

FreightWaves: Which Lanes To Target, Avoid

Thanks to a partnership with FreightWaves, we’re providing you with insights on some of the most popular lanes in the country. FreightWaves is reporting that even though Atlanta’s freight market is huge, backhaul opportunities will be limited out of Atlanta. With this in mind, if you typically run Chicago to Atlanta, you may want to consider other destinations that offer more reloads. It’s recommended that you cover Cape Girardeau to Dallas on the spot market this week, as Cape Girardeau is one of the tightest capacity markets in the nation. If you run dry van and have extra trucks in the Chicago, area, you may want to run Chicago to Detroit this week, as spot rate volatility will likely allow you to increase margins in this lane.
