Jess’ Work at Trucker Tools

“I’ve recently been made the product manager for Trucker Tools,” Jess said. “I will continue to play a role as lead app developer for the company. I’m responsible for seeing through all mobile app projects from start to finish, from the design phase through development and deployment. It also involves monitoring the performance of the app. Another aspect of this role includes the opportunity to work directly with drivers and partnering organizations; that’s an aspect of the job that I definitely enjoy. Stepping into my new role as product manager, I will be meeting with our customers at a much larger frequency in order to get their feedback on our product and insight into how we can build up our product to provide solutions to problems they face. My new position will require paying attention to where our industry is headed and what solutions are needed that Trucker Tools could provide. I am excited to connect with more of our team members and to have the opportunity to play a larger role in product decision making and the growth of our company.”

What Jess Likes About Working at Trucker Tools

“One thing I like would definitely have to be the fast paced collaborative environment,” Jess shared. “There’s always something new to work on. It doesn’t get boring. My work is never mundane. It can mean that we’re under pressure at times, but I think because we have a great team we are only motivated more to meet our goals. The second thing that I really enjoy about working here is that the company really values keeping the customers in mind. I can really appreciate that anytime we’re building a new feature or making an update to the platform, we are doing that based on feedback from our customers. We’re always collaborating with the people who will actually be using the product while we’re designing new features. That’s just a really great mindset to have and I appreciate that we’re putting our customers first rather than just doing what we think is best.”

How Trucker Tools Has Helped Jess Grow Professionally

“In my three years with the company, I’ve gotten to hone in on a lot of important soft skills, such as communication, organization and presenting,” Jess shared. “Some of those things come naturally to me and others I’ve improved upon since I started. I truly feel like you can’t really get the same opportunities at other companies. Building product features from start to finish isn’t something engineers with only a couple of years’ experience get to be a part of at all companies, let alone given the free reign and responsibility to lead a lot of the process. There’s a lot of room to grow. I think it’s a booming industry and I’ve already been able to experience a lot of that growth in my first few years here.”

What Jess Likes To Do Outside of Work

“Growing up in a small town in Maine, we didn’t have Wi-Fi access at home,” said Jess. “My parents just got Wi-Fi in 2020. When I was a kid up and until last year, we got Netflix DVDs sent in the mail and I grew up loving movies. I obviously spent a ton of time outdoors. That’s what Maine is wonderful for. I love doing anything outdoors, such as going on hikes, going to the beach and the lake, and fishing. I also grew up playing a lot of games and doing a lot of puzzles with my family. I love brain teasers, board games, card games — you name it. I love anything artistic, arts and crafts, going to museums and music. I’m a big DIYer around the house type of person.”

One of Jess’ Most Important Mentors

“One of my mentors was actually my art teacher in college,” Jess shared. “His name is Greg Bailey. He’s one of my mentors because he was outside the realm of the typical person I had ever looked up to. Growing up, I always liked math and I looked up to my math teachers. I played a bunch of sports, so I looked up to coaches. Art was an interest that really developed when I got to college. Greg is a big advocate for environmental justice and opened my mind to other interests. He’s the type of person who really holds everyone accountable for their own actions and their own choices. He taught me the lesson that who you are is defined by the choices you make now, not just by your past. Greg taught me to consciously think about each step that I take in life. I just appreciated that he stood behind the things that were important to him and that he believed in. That has inspired me to do the same.”
