Where’s the Freight? Texarkana, Tucson, San Diego and Birmingham Hottest Freight Markets in Coming Week

Welcome to the Friday edition of “Where’s the Freight?,” Trucker Tools’ free freight market report for fleets and drivers. 

In today’s freight market report, you’ll notice that reefer and flatbed demand is expected to remain high for Texarkana, Texas, with the region’s reefer market projected to see a major uptick in demand over the next five to seven days. If you’re running power only loads this week, you’ll want to prioritize loads to/from San Diego, Birmingham, Ala., and Richmond, Va., as demand is projected to be high or increasing. For those of you who run dry van freight, you can expect demand for dry van capacity to increase this week inbound to and outbound from Ithaca, N.Y., and Gary, Ind., while the Albuquerque, N.M., dry van market is projected to be the coldest freight market across the United States and Canada this week.

Where Demand/Rates Will Be Highest or Rising This Week

  • Flatbed demand and rates for Texarkana, Texas, are expected to remain high. 
  • Reefer demand and rates for Tucson, Ariz., and Texarkana, Texas, are likely to be high. Reefer demand to/from Texarkana, Texas, also is projected to increase.
  • Power only demand and rates for San Diego and Birmingham, Ala., are likely to be high. Power only demand to/from Richmond, Va., and Saint Cloud, Minn., is expected to rise. 
  • Dry van demand and rates for Ithaca, N.Y., and Gary, Ind., likely will increase.

Where Freight Demand/Rates Will Be Lowest or Falling This Week

  • Flatbed demand and rates for Brooklyn, N.Y., will be very low. 
  • Reefer demand and rates for Pittsburgh and Cheyenne, Wyo., are projected to be low. Reefer demand to/from Edmonton, Alberta, is likely to decline.
  • Power only demand and rates for Albuquerque, N.M., are expected to be extremely low. Power only demand to/from Las Vegas is projected to decrease.
  • Dry van demand and rates for Flagstaff, Ariz., likely will be very low. Dry van demand to/from Ottawa, Ontario, is likely to decline.

  • Five Coldest Markets this week: 1. Albuquerque, N.M. (power only), 2. Brooklyn, N.Y. (flatbed), 3. Flagstaff, Ariz. (dry van), 4. Pittsburgh (reefer), and Cheyenne, Wyo. (reefer).
  • Market To Watch: Reefer demand inbound to and outbound from Texarkana, Texas, is projected to triple over the next five to seven days. 
  • U.S. customs maritime import shipments to the Port of New York and New Jersey increased by 50 percent on Monday according to FreightWaves SONAR Sightings.  
  • Truck freight volume fell by 2.6 percent in Q3 on the U.S. Bank National Shipments Index, though freight volumes in the Southwest increased by nearly six percent.
  • This year, the average driver turnover rate at private fleets has hit 22 percent for the first time
