Where’s the Freight? Dodge City, Texarkana, San Diego and St. Louis Best Markets for Fleets and Owner Ops This Week

Welcome to the new edition of “Where’s the Freight?,” Trucker Tools’ free freight forecast for trucking companies and owner operators. “Where’s the Freight?” is a three-times-a-week market report that tells you where demand and rates are likely to be high and low across the United States and Canada over the next five to seven day period. With this information, you can avoid markets where demand and rates are projected to be low and prioritize loads into and out of markets where demand and rates are likely to be high.

Over the next week, you can expect demand for power only capacity to/from San Diego, St. Louis, New Castle, Del., and Portland, Ore., to be high or to increase. The Dodge City, Kan., reefer market snags the number one spot in today’s Top Five Hottest Markets list, while the Rochester, N.Y., flatbed market is projected to be the lowest demand/rate market in the coming week. Speaking of flatbed, once again the Texarkana, Texas, market will be a hot spot for flatbed this week.

Where Demand and Rates Will Be Highest or Rising This Week

  • Flatbed demand and rates for Texarkana, Texas, are likely to be high.
  • Reefer demand and rates for Dodge City, Kan., will be very high. Demand for reefer capacity to/from Texarkana, Texas, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Tucson, Ariz., is expected to rise.
  • Power only demand and rates for San Diego, Texarkana, Texas, and St. Louis are projected to be high. Power only demand to/from New Castle, Del., and Portland, Ore., is expected to increase.

Where Demand and Rates Will Be Lowest or Falling This Week

  • Flatbed demand and rates for Rochester, N.Y., will be extremely low.
  • Reefer demand and rates for Minot, N.D., Reno, Nev., Pittsburgh, and Tallahassee, Fla., once again will be very low. Reefer demand inbound to and outbound from Winnipeg, Manitoba, is likely to decrease.

  • Five Hottest Markets this week: 1. Dodge City, Kan. (reefer), 2. Texarkana, Texas (flatbed), 3. San Diego (power only), 4. Texarkana, Texas (power only), and 5. St. Louis (power only).
  • Five Coldest Markets this week: 1. Rochester, N.Y. (flatbed), 2. Minot, N.D. (reefer), 3. Reno, Nev. (reefer), 4. Pittsburgh (reefer), and 5. Tallahassee, Fla. (reefer).
  • Market To Watch: This week, demand for power only capacity inbound to and outbound from New Castle, Del., is projected to be 12 times higher than it was during the same week in 2021.
  • Over the next week, the San Diego power only market will favor carriers and owner operators by more than three to one, which means there likely will be at least three loads available to every power only driver headed into or out of the area.
  • In the coming week, demand for reefer capacity for Dodge City, Kan., will be twice as high as it was during the same week last year.
  • The latest USDA Specialty Crops National Truck Report indicates capacity shortages in the Florida West and South Carolina District, Southeast Missouri and Eastern North Carolina.
