Hottest Markets For Truckers in the Next Week: Cheyenne and Ithaca Flatbed, Tucson and Dodge City Reefer, Twin Falls Power-Only

In today’s Market Index Report, we see sustained demand for flatbed capacity primarily in the middle of the country, while demand for reefer is skyrocketing. Many of you will be heading home to be with family and to take a few days off to celebrate the Christmas holiday on Thursday and Friday. With fewer drivers on the road, expect high demand and rates across all markets toward the end of the week.

Hottest Markets 

• Trucker Tools Market Index is predicting that the hottest markets for flatbed in the next week will be Cheyenne, Wyo.; Ithaca, N.Y.; Jonesboro, Ark.; Des Moines, Iowa; Montgomery, Ala.; and Minot, N.D.
• We’ll see demand and rates for reefer trending up over the next five to seven days in Tucson, Ariz.; Dodge City, Kan.; and Yakima, Wash.
• The Trucker Tools Market Index has Twin Falls, S.D. as the hottest market for power-only in the next week.

Cooling Markets 

• Expect demand for flatbed to fall over the next week for Washington, D.C.; Duluth, Minn., and Calgary, Alberta (Canada).
• The coldest markets for reefer for the next five to seven days will be Hartford, Conn., and Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada).
• Demand and rates for power only in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Savannah, Ga., will be trending down for drivers and carriers in the coming week.

Trucker Tools’ Market Insights

• Demand for flatbed capacity in Cheyenne, Wyo., continues to trend high. Over the last two weeks, Cheyenne has been named the hottest flatbed market in the country five times.
• Agricultural machinery manufacturer John Deere has a massive manufacturing plant in Des Moines, Iowa, which is likely driving sustained demand for flatbed capacity there.
• Though not as hot as it has been in previous weeks, the Yakima, Wash., reefer market will remain strong for carriers and drivers.
• In Tucson, Ariz., demand for reefer is approximately 50 percent higher than it was at this time last year.
• The cities listed in our Cooling Markets are cooling only slightly, reflecting high demand for capacity across markets.

Trucker Tools is partnering with FreightWaves SONAR to provide you with additional information on the hottest and coldest markets today and in the coming week. Today’s SONAR Daily Outlook has the national average for reefer outbound tender rejection rate at a whopping 45 percent. Salt Lake City, Ontario, Fresno, Joliet and Allentown are the current top five largest reefer volume markets in the United States. 

The outbound reefer tender rejection rates for Little Rock, Savannah and Fayetteville are over 70 percent, and over 60 percent for Omaha, St. Cloud, Jacksonville, Tulsa, Houston and Twin Falls. SONAR also is predicting a significant increase in import volumes this week that may cause some importers to choose alternate West Coast ports or ports on the East Coast instead of L.A. and Long Beach.

Hot SONAR Lanes

SONAR reports that reefer rejection rates for Indianapolis to Chicago have jumped to 42 percent. Expect outbound demand and rates for Ft. Worth to Chicago to increase this week. For Lakeland to Atlanta, Lakeland outbound tender rejections hit a new high for the year, while tender volumes for Atlanta have started to fall.
